Coach Randy Pfund and the Lakers have signed a one-year contract extension, it was announced Friday, a move he realizes guarantees financial security through 1995-96 but not job security.

Owner Jerry Buss approached Pfund after last season and said he wanted to talk about adding a year to the contract, then reiterated that during training camp by saying he wanted to have Pfund around “in some capacity.” But after discussing the reassignment provision, the sides agreed to a standard coaching-only deal.

“That means something to me personally,” Pfund said. “I’ve been in the organization. I was hired to be head coach. Without going overboard on it and trying to pin too much too it, because I’m a realistic person, I think it showed there is some confidence in our management in what I’ve tried to do the last year and a half. I think you can leave it at that.

“If something else happens at another point in time and they have interest in me doing something else within the organization, that would be another arrangement.”
