COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cal State Fullerton’s Molnar Is in Wrestling Quarterfinals

Cal State Fullerton’s Laszlo Molnar, wrestling at 167 pounds, advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA wrestling championships Thursday at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Molnar, who is wrestling in his fourth NCAA championships, advanced after defeating Rick Hepp of Lehigh, 9-7, in a second-round sudden-death match. In the first round, Molnar edged Matt Orton of Northwest Missouri State, 3-2.

The other three Fullerton wrestlers who qualified for the championships, Jeff Maes (126 pounds), Ken Workman (142) and Dwayne Buth (190 pounds), did not advance to the quarterfinals. Maes and Workman, however, did win their first-round matches.

At the end of the first day of the three-day event, the top schools were Iowa, which leads with 24 points, followed by Oklahoma State 22.75, Arizona State and Oregon State tied for third at 14.5 and Minnesota with 14.25. Other leaders were: Penn State, 14 points; Iowa State, 12.75; Oklahoma, 11.5; and a three-way tie for ninth from Boise State, Clarion and host North Carolina, all with 11. Quarterfinals begin today.

In nonconference men’s baseball:

Chapman 9, Whitman 1--Eleazar Eliaondo went the distance for Chapman, striking out five and allowing eight hits. Catcher Paul Halpin went two for three with one RBI for Chapman (7-13).

In nonconference women’s softball:

Concordia 4-17, Coast Guard Academy 1-0--In game 1, Julie Mangels had two hits and scored two runs for Concordia (7-7). In the second game, Concordia’s Sarah Warner hit two doubles and had four runs batted in.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Montana State 9, Southern California College 0--Filip Palasz started the winning streak for Montana State, winning in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Southern California Christian is 3-10.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Montana State 7, UC Irvine 2--Jennifer Wall won at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3, then teamed up with Natasha Frantz to win at No. 2 doubles, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 for the Anteaters (5-10).
