UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Matt Maloney majors in history at an Ivy League school, which should help him land a good job.
He also could get a union card as a mason.
Maloney, Pennsylvania’s leading scorer all season, laid plenty of bricks Saturday in the Quakers’ 70-58 loss to Florida in the second round of the NCAA East Regional.
“I made some bad decisions on shot selection,” Maloney said. “I knew I wasn’t shooting well, but I had confidence that the next one was going in.”
It wasn’t. Normally a 34% shooter from long range, Maloney missed 14 of 16 three-point shots and made only four of 21 shots overall.
While he kept missing, Florida’s Dan Cross and Craig Brown scored 16 points during a 20-9 run midway through the second half that led the third-seeded Gators (23-7) to victory.
Penn (25-3) closed to within 44-43, but Maloney pulled up from 20 feet and missed.
In the next 90 seconds, Cross made two free throws, Brown made a three-point basket, Maloney missed another three-point shot and Brown made his third of the game to put the Gators in control, 52-43.
