COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : McElderry, Saddleback Win Golf Invitational

Colin McElderry shot a three-under-par 69 at Whispering Palms Golf Club in San Diego as Saddleback won the 13-team San Diego Golf Academy Invitational on Friday.

Saddleback edged host San Diego Golf Academy, 360-364. McElderry was match medalist. Rancho Santiago was third at 369.

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Orange Coast 4, Saddleback 0--Kristen Varagne struck out six and gave up three hits to lead Orange Coast (22-10-2, 9-2). Stefanie Ritchey had three hits, scored once and had one run batted in for the Pirates. Laura Kesterson gave up one earned run and struck out three for Saddleback (17-13, 5-6).

In Orange Coast Conference men’s swimming:

Orange Coast 142, Saddleback 83--Chris Andrade won the 200 backstroke (2:07.52) and Craig McMillan won the 1,000 freestyle (10:12.28) to help lead host Orange Coast. Andrade and McMillan teamed with Edward Sick and Matt Panighetti to win the 400 freestyle relay for the Pirates.

In the South Coast Conference:

Long Beach 54, Golden West 49; Golden West 84, Pasadena 10--Golden West lost eight unanswered points to Long Beach because of its lack of divers, and lost for the first time this season. Matt Braun and Chris Koerner were multiple-event winners for Golden West (4-1). Braun won the 1,000 freestyle (10:18.80) and 500 freestyle (4:59.85). Koerner won the 50 freestyle (22.15) and teamed with Braun for the winning 400 medley relay team (3:23.29).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s swimming:

Orange Coast 187, Saddleback 101--Tina Edwards won the one-meter and three-meter diving to lead host Orange Coast.

In the South Coast Conference:

Golden West 107, Long Beach 23; Golden West 115, Pasadena 5--Golden West won all 14 swimming events to remain undefeated at 5-0. Kate Kilgallen and Belinda Kernkamp were multiple-event winners for Golden West. Kilgallen won the 100 backstroke (1:09.88) and 50 backstroke (32.60). Kernkamp won the 50 freestyle (26.98), 500 freestyle (5:54.48) and anchored the winning 200 medley relay (2:04.90) and 200 freestyle relay (1:50.06).
