Johnny Orr, basketball coach at Iowa State for 14 years, announced Thursday that he would not return for a 15th season.

Fighting back tears, Orr, 66, said at Ames, Iowa, that he will remain at Iowa State as associate athletic director to fulfill the last year of his contract.

He was 218-200 at Iowa State--14-13 last season--and 209-113 in 12 seasons at Michigan before that. A 39-33 record in three seasons at Massachusetts gives him an overall coaching record of 466-346.

Orr’s best record at Michigan was 26-4 in 1976-77, when the Wolverines won the Big Ten championship and were ranked No. 1 nationally.

The Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education has accused Fresno State of failing to provide women with athletic opportunities comparable to those offered men.

The university was cited for 11 violations, most dealing with the lack of adequate facilities and sports for women athletes.
