SKIRTING THE ISSUE

David Wharton’s reflections on the kilted look for men caused me to reflect, too (Style, March 20). As owner and wearer of a real Scottish kilt, I’m bemused at what we consider “traditional views of masculinity.” Modern pants go back only to Beau Brummel in the early 1880s, while some of history’s most macho men--Alexander, Caesar and members of the Black Watch and Gordon Highlanders among them--wore kilts or tunics.

As for how to carry one’s wallet, how about the Scottish sporran? Too few compartments? Wear a fanny pack. It’s just an updated sporran.

If Wharton is really worried about what is worn under a kilt, try this on anyone who asks: “Why, nothing’s worn. Everything’s in perfect order.”
