COMPTON : Local Charge Plan Is in Offing for City Workers
City workers will soon be able to load up on goods from local merchants simply by flashing employee identification.
The picture badge given to all city workers will function as a sort of charge card, good in participating stores within the city limits, under a plan designed to promote local shopping, said Councilman Ronald Green.
Employees who sign up for the program will be able to charge up to $500 in Compton stores, then pay off the interest-free balance in $25 increments taken directly out of their bi-weekly paychecks. Shopkeepers will pay a 3.5% administrative fee on every purchase, Green said.
“This won’t cost the city any money . . . and it will stimulate employees to spend their dollars at home,” Green said.
So far, about 60 merchants have signed up for the program, Green said.
