OXNARD : Man Jailed in Death Faces New Charges

An Oxnard man jailed on suspicion of murder 11 days ago was indicted Wednesday and charged not only with the April 10 stabbing death, but also with severely beating his girlfriend in the fall.

Donald William Culbertson, 22, faces charges of murder and use of a deadly weapon in connection with the slaying of David Rubio, 19, of Oxnard. In addition, the grand jury returned an aggravated assault indictment in the September beating of Mysti Giralde, 20.

Police arrested Culbertson at the scene of the stabbing, an alley behind the 5200 block of Columbus Place. Rubio had borrowed a car from Culbertson’s sister and was late returning it one night, Deputy Dist. Atty. Don Glynn said. That led to an argument and eventually to Culbertson stabbing Rubio, Glynn said.

After arresting Culbertson, investigators discovered outstanding warrants against him in the September beating.

Prosecutors charge that Culbertson hit and kicked Giralde, beating her so brutally that she was hospitalized twice and unable to eat for weeks. She was fed intravenously while her pancreas healed, Glynn said.

Culbertson remains in Ventura County Jail on $250,000 bail.
