HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Blast by Olivares Sinks Simi Valley
Johnny Olivares slugged a home run with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Channel Islands to a 4-3 upset of Simi Valley in a Marmonte League baseball game Wednesday at Oxnard.
Olivares, who also homered earlier in the game, finished with three hits, three runs batted in and two runs to back the three-hit pitching of Rene Sanchez (3-2).
Sanchez struck out four and did not allow a hit after the second inning. Tony DeLaTorre added three hits, including a double, for Channel Islands (10-7, 4-3 in league play).
Ryan Hankins and Brian Kavanagh hit solo home runs for Simi Valley (13-4, 5-2).
Thousand Oaks 5, Westlake 1--Brian Downing (3-3) pitched a four-hitter and Greg Aguilar had two hits, two runs, two RBIs and three stolen bases for the Lancers in a Marmonte League game. Eric Soliz had two hits for Thousand Oaks (10-7, 3-3).
Camarillo 9, Agoura 2--Jay Nirenberg led off the second inning with a homer to lead the Scorpions in a Marmonte League game.
Erik Jue drove in two runs with a single in the third inning for Camarillo (7-9, 2-4). Thomas Taketa (3-2) picked up the victory.
Alemany 4, Chaminade 0--Rudy Pantoja (4-0) pitched a seven-hitter in a Mission League game at Chaminade. Robbie Rehfeld homered and singled, and Monrad Jensen went two for four and had an RBI for Alemany (14-6, 5-2).
Kevin Lohman of Chaminade (11-7, 3-4) had three hits.
St. Bernard 5, Harvard-Westlake 4--Paul Lopez hit a solo home run with two out in the seventh inning of a Mission League game to hand pitcher Scott Garson (5-1) his first loss. Jon Schaeffer led the Wolverines (11-9, 2-5) with a two-run homer--his sixth of the season.
Birmingham 3, Grant 2--Donnie Wingo scattered six hits for the Braves in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. David Cohen’s single drove in Jimmy Uline with the go-ahead run in the sixth inning for Birmingham (7-11, 3-5). Aaron Amitin tripled, doubled and singled for Grant (8-6, 5-3).
Sylmar 6, Van Nuys 0--Mario Cervantes (4-0) pitched five shutout innings for Sylmar (17-3, 8-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Steve Zamora and Hiram Damwijk each had two hits and Jose Palacios drove in two runs.
Poly 5, Canoga Park 4--Francisco Dorame of Poly (15-2, 7-1) hit a two-run triple in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie in the Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Canoga Park. Javier Sanchez (8-0) pitched a complete game.
Monroe 9, North Hollywood 6--Jaime Dorado had three hits and three RBIs, David Lusk had two hits and three RBIs, and Wayne Nix homered for Monroe (5-8, 4-4) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at North Hollywood. Luis Gutierrez (three hits) and Rafael Cabrera (single and triple) led North Hollywood (6-10, 0-8).
Hueneme 10, Oxnard 0--Hueneme’s Josh Towers allowed two hits in five innings of the Channel League game at Oxnard. Towers (4-2) struck out six.
Raudel Flores had two hits, three runs and two stolen bases, and Art Bolen had two hits, scored twice and drove in two runs.
Rio Mesa 9, Santa Paula 1--Manuel Perez and Marcus Yasutake each had two hits, Donald DiDomizio hit a two-run homer and Charlie Boch and Vince Roman each added two RBIs for Rio Mesa (12-5) in a nonleague game.
Bell-Jeff 12, St. Genevieve 5--Jerry Villanea and Josh Readman each had three hits in a Camino Real League game. David Quintero, Richard Szeptycki and Victor Ayala each had two hits for the Guards (5-11, 1-2). Chris Ruby had two hits for St. Genevieve.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Canoga Park d. Van Nuys, 9-15, 15-11, 15-8, 15-9--Sobeck Banuelos had 29 kills to help hand Van Nuys its first defeat in a Mid-Valley League match. Craig Osstad added 21 kills and Jason Carbonell had 57 assists for Canoga Park (9-3, 3-1). Ben Birken had four blocks for Van Nuys (11-1, 3-1).
Chatsworth d. Kennedy, 15-5, 17-15, 15-13--Scott Palmer had 13 kills and Tony Abel added 32 assists for Chatsworth in a Northwest Valley Conference match.
Montclair Prep d. Calabasas, 15-1, 16-14, 15-2--Joey Meller had 15 kills and 11 assists, and Josh Koncel added 10 kills and 16 assists for Montclair Prep (9-4).
