Jeremy Veal of San Dimas was named boys’ player of the year and Jenny Griffen of Bishop Amat and Kelly Morris of Diamond Bar were named girls’ co-players of the year at The Times’ 1994 San Gabriel Valley basketball awards banquet Sunday at the Holiday Inn in Pasadena.

Maurice Hilliard of Bassett, who led Bassett to the school’s first Southern Section title in any sport, was named boys’ coach of the year. Lyle Honda of San Gabriel, who guided his team to the Southern Section semifinals, was selected girls’ coach of the year.

Twenty players--10 boys and 10 girls--were selected to The Times’ San Gabriel Valley all-star teams by area coaches.

Veal, a 6-foot-3 senior guard, concluded an outstanding career by averaging 30.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists for San Dimas, which advanced to the Southern Section 3-A championship game for the third year in a row.

Griffen, a 6-1 1/2 center and forward, averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds for a Bishop Amat team that spent almost the entire season ranked No. 1 in the San Gabriel Valley.

Morris, a 6-1 center, was one of the area’s top inside players. She averaged 14.3 points, eight rebounds and three assists for Diamond Bar, which advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Section Division 1-AA playoffs.

Gene Zeller, football coach at Blair High for the past six seasons, has resigned for personal reasons.

Zeller’s teams compiled a record of 21-34-4.

COLLEGES

The Citrus College men’s and women’s track teams won Foothill Conference championships and will compete in the Southern California Regionals next week.

Lataya Woods won the 200 and 400 meters and also helped the Owls to victory in the 400 and 1,600-meter relays as Citrus won its fourth conference championship in five years.

Jaime Villalobos won the shotput and the discus to pace the Citrus men, who won their second consecutive conference championship.

Kevin Schramm of the Citrus baseball team had his 35-game hitting streak end during a 2-1 Foothill Conference victory over College of the Desert.

Schramm, whose streak dated to last season, had entered the game with a .549 average and 12 home runs and 49 runs batted in. Citrus, under Coach Skip Claprood, began this week 27-4 and 17-1 in the conference.

Cal Poly Pomona has inducted nine former athletes into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Inductees included Xenia Anastasiadou, a women’s tennis player; Suzy Brazney (softball); Chi Cheng (women’s track and field); Ron Larrieu (track and field); Bill Leedom (basketball); Darrell Miller (baseball); Jill Morton-Beck (women’s tennis); Naiz Muhammad (football), and Rhonda Wheatley-Gano (softball).

Cal Poly Pomona will be the host school for the NCAA Division II women’s tennis championships May 6-12 at the Industry Hills Sheraton Resort.

Pomona is ranked No. 1 in Division II with a 19-1-1 record.

Dave Anderlik is batting .411 and Brian Dennis is hitting .380 for the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team, which entered the week 26-20-1 and 11-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

The Broncos are in third place, 3 1/2 games behind first-place Cal State Dominguez Hills. Pomona plays host to UC Riverside on Saturday.

Pomona-Pitzer’s baseball team enters this weekend’s Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series against Caltech having set several school records.

Pomona-Pitzer, coming off its first sweep of Claremont-Mudd, began the week 18-12 and in third-place in the SCIAC at 11-7. Pomona-Pitzer has already eclipsed its record of 10 SCIAC wins set last season. The Sagehens will finish above .500 in conference for the first time since 1957 and will finish above .500 overall for the first time since 1969. The 18 victories are the most since 1957, when the Sagehens finished 23-11.

Jarrod Kula is batting .606 and Emiliano Escandon is hitting .453 in conference games for the Sagehens, who will participate in the SCIAC tournament May 5-7.

A 3,200-meter relay team of Tony Bergman, Jon Colleti, Anthony Fischer and Erik Starkey will represent Azusa Pacific Saturday in the Penn Relays at Philadelphia.

The team’s appearance marks the first time Azusa Pacific has sent a representative to the prestigious meet.

The Azusa Pacific men’s tennis team is participating in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District 3 tournament this week at Westmont College.

Bill Bush of Azusa Pacific is seeded third and Miika Keronen fourth in singles. The two players are the top-seeded team in doubles. Azusa Pacific’s Kevin Haymond and Alex Marcial are seeded fourth in doubles.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Chris Beck, Bishop Amat--Beck, a senior right-hander, gave up only three hits in a 4-1 complete-game victory against St. Paul that improved the Lancers’ record to 20-0.

Beck has signed a letter of intent to play baseball next season at Loyola Marymount.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Dave Fair, Azusa Pacific--Fair, a junior from Lake Forest, qualified for the NAIA championships in the 110-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.64 seconds at the Meet of Champions at Azusa Pacific.

MISCELLANY

The public is invited to participate in two grass volleyball tournaments that will staged at Azusa Pacific University. Pairs competition in men’s A, men’s B, women’s A and co-ed divisions will be staged May 7 and June 16. Entry fee is $15 a team in advance, $17 on the day of the tournament.
