Kuralt to Host ‘Van Dyke Show’ Special: Retired CBS newsman Charles Kuralt will host “The Dick Van Dyke Show Retrospective,” a May 23 CBS special featuring clips and reminiscences from Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore, Carl Reiner and other cast members. Reiner created the 1961-66 series, and says he held out on a retrospective until he could find a host with the “right cachet, somebody like Charles Kuralt.”

MOVIES

Screen Deal: Culture Clash, the Los Angeles Chicano comedy trio that has already transformed its successful stage shows into a sketch comedy series on Fox TV, will star in its first major feature, “Gomez, Gomez, Gomez,” for United Artists Pictures. The film will star the threesome--Richard Montoya, Ric Salinas and Herbert Siguenza--as bumbling L.A. detectives hired by a museum to recover a priceless stolen Mexican Indian headdress. Studio executives reportedly agreed to the picture immediately after the trio acted out the entire story line during a meeting. Culture Clash has previously appeared in the films “Encino Man,” “Falling Down” and “Hero,” plus the independent project “Columbus on Trial.”

THE ARTS

Ramona Directors Step Down: Maurice and Hilda Jara, co-directors of Hemet’s Ramona Pageant for the past 27 years, are retiring after this weekend’s final performances of the 71-year-old outdoor play. The couple set a longevity record for directing the pageant. Maurice Jara, 72, cited health reasons for his departure and added, “I’d hate for the day to come when they’d throw me out.” Prior to directing the pageant, he set a record for playing the co-starring role of Alessandro longer than anyone else--15 years. Pageant executive director Roland Parker said a handful of applications had been received for the director’s job, and interviews will begin soon.

* UCLA’s Aman Shows Canceled: The UCLA Center for the Performing Arts has canceled its June 4 and 5 performances of the Aman International Music & Dance Ensemble. The performances were originally scheduled for UCLA’s Royce Hall, but were moved to the Wadsworth Theater after the Royce sustained significant damage in the Jan. 17 earthquake. The production won’t fit on the Wadsworth stage, however, so refunds will be offered to all ticket holders. The Aman company has scheduled a makeup performance June 19 at Glendale’s Alex Theater. Separate tickets must be purchased for that show.

POP/ROCK

Judd Sidelined: Country star Wynonna Judd won’t make it to Tuesday night’s 29th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards Show. The singer was hospitalized in Nashville last week for a ruptured spinal disc and pinched nerve, and her doctor says she must rest until at least Wednesday, and then undergo physical therapy. Judd also had to cancel scheduled appearances on NBC’s “Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” and on the Gospel Music Assn.’s annual Dove Awards show.
