Nation IN BRIEF : TEXAS : New Youth Curfew Begins in Dallas
Police in Dallas have started enforcing a controversial curfew that requires youths under 17 to be at home or with chaperons after midnight on weekends and 11 p.m. on weeknights. Because of an American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit, the city did not enforce the law after it passed in 1991. U.S. District Judge Jerry Buchmeyer ruled the law unconstitutional, but the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals overturned that decision. The U.S. Supreme Court has not said if it will hear the case. Police have said they are not going to enforce the ordinance aggressively. Violators can be given a warning, a ride home or a $500 fine, or be taken into custody.
