They’ll Cook for the Kids

More than 130 amateur chefs--all men--will vie for medals Sunday as they cook for charity in the second annual Gourmet Guys contest. Last year, the event raised $32,000 for the Children’s Museum at La Habra.

Guests get unlimited sampling for $35 per person. All proceeds benefit the museum.

Planet Hollywood, Mothers Market, Hassans and other local restaurants are preparing for the three-day Taste of Costa Mesa, beginning Friday in the South Coast Plaza parking lot near Sears.

Along with “tastes,” the event features live entertainment, a community arts pavilion and a children’s activity area.

Admission is $5 for adults; free for children under 12. Food and drinks are $1 to $3 each.

Hours are Friday from 5 to 11 p.m.; Saturday from noon to 11 p.m.; and Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. For more information, call (714) 549-2547.

Waiters are invited to test their speed on Saturday in a Waiter Relay Race sponsored by the Orange County chapter of the Make-a-Wish Foundation. The Races are from 9 to 11 a.m. at Circus Vargas in the Huntington Beach Mall on Beach Boulevard.

Teams of four pay $150 to enter, with all of that amount going to charity; spectators pay $1.

The Disneyland Hotel will have former “Daniel Boone” star Fess Parker hosting a wine dinner Monday night.

The evening, which begins with a reception at 6:30, features food prepared by Granville’s Steak House, matched with wines from Parker’s vineyard in Santa Barbara. Among the courses are an artichoke soupe en croute with a 1992 Chardonnay reserve, and a tenderloin of beef with chili corn relish and a 1992 Syrah.

Dinner is $60 per person, including tax, tip and an autographed bottle of Parker Chardonnay.
