Scyphers Tests District, Files Grievance
SIMI VALLEY — Mike Scyphers, Simi Valley High’s suspended baseball coach, filed a grievance Friday with the Simi Valley Unified School District, claiming he was suspended without proper notice, Scyphers’ attorney Brian O’Neill said.
Scyphers, 41, was suspended May 3, pending police and district investigations into possible financial and disciplinary improprieties. The district has maintained that Scyphers’ right to five days’ notice does not apply because he was suspended from his job as coach, not as a teacher.
O’Neill said it is now up to the district to resolve the matter or it will go to arbitration.
“It’s a time-consuming process,” O’Neill said. “It’s unlikely this issue is going to be resolved during this school year.”
The Pioneers completed the regular season Friday with a 7-2 victory over Channel Islands.
