L.A. Seeks Grant for Business Quake Relief
The Los Angeles City Council voted Friday to apply for $1.8 million in federal earthquake recovery money that would include $350,000 for a San Fernando Valley consortium that hopes to create a recovery plan for Valley businesses.
The U.S. Department of Commerce and Economic Development Administration will be reviewing the grant application within the next month or so, city officials said.
The Valley consortium includes the Valley Industry Council, the United Valley Chambers of Commerce and the Valley Economic Development Corp.
Under the grant application, the consortium would use the money to hire consultants who would help the business group assess the Valley’s economy, define business problems created by the quake and suggest solutions.
The rest of the grant would be used to hire four “industry coordinators” for 18 months to target industries citywide that were hard hit by the quake. Another six consultants would be hired to meet with business owners to identify gaps in the city’s recovery plans.
Finally, the grant would pay for a two-year project coordinator to oversee the entire city’s business recovery efforts.
