U.S. Firm to Aid Czech Reactors, Report Says
NEW YORK — Westinghouse intends to use its own technology to complete Soviet-designed nuclear reactors in the Czech Republic, the New York Times reported.
The Clinton Administration recently approved $317 million in loan guarantees to finance the work, which will represent the first attempt to graft U.S. technology onto a Soviet-built reactor, the newspaper reported in today’s editions.
Not everyone favors the plan, however, with some critics expressing concern that the United States could wind up paying for a nuclear accident.
But Administration officials say the technology would increase safety at the plant where the reactors are located, near the Czech town of Temelin, and that it represents a step toward improving safety at other Soviet-designed reactors.
The reactors in Temelin are the most advanced Soviet design. They are not the type that exploded at Chernobyl in 1986.
