Murrieta’s Davenport Among Winners in Second Round
Spanish stars Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Conchita Martinez breezed into the third round of the French Open Thursday with straight-set victories at Roland Garros Stadium.
No. 2-ranked Sanchez Vicario routed Noelle Van Lottum of France, 6-1, 6-0, and No. 3 Martinez defeated Ginger Helgeson of Alpine, Calif., 6-2, 6-3.
On a slow day in the women’s field, No. 9 Lindsay Davenport of Murrieta Valley High advanced past Katryna Nowak of Poland, 6-4, 6-2, and No. 11 Anke Huber of Germany defeated Meike Babel, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
Davenport, the 6-foot-2, 160-pound teen-ager, said she is happy with her clay-court performance so far but added: “This isn’t exactly my favorite surface. . . . I can’t really slide that well.”
She did not have to run around too much in overcoming Novak, building a 3-0 lead in the second set to take command of the match.
