HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Brentwood Ousts Burbank in Tennis
Second-seeded Burbank High was stymied Thursday in its attempt to repeat as the Southern Section Division III boys’ tennis champion, dropping a semifinal match on the road to third-seeded Brentwood, 12-9.
The Bulldogs (20-3) won only one set in singles play, a 6-2 victory by Vazghen Zaghiyian over Kevin Pivnick.
Burbank Coach Clyde Richards said the turning point came when the No. 1 doubles team of Phil Cano and Brad Warner--who are competing in today’s individual quarterfinals--lost, 6-4, to Brentwood’s No. 1 team of Scott Kaufman and Tyler Barnett.
This marked Burbank’s seventh consecutive year of reaching at least the quarterfinals.
Brentwood (17-3) will face Pasadena Poly in the team finals Wednesday.
