Charles Transfers to Nevada Las Vegas
Deriek Charles, a former standout running back at Hart High, has transferred from Washington State to Nevada Las Vegas, he said Thursday.
A redshirt freshman last season, Charles said he decided to change schools because Cougar coaches converted him to cornerback. NCAA rules mandate that Charles sit out the 1994 season. He will have three seasons of eligibility remaining beginning in 1995.
The Times’ 1992 Valley back of the year, Charles rushed for 1,133 yards and 15 touchdowns, and caught 44 passes for 757 yards and eight touchdowns. He led Hart to an 11-1 record and the Foothill League championship.
The Indians were ranked No. 1 in The Times’ regional poll for much of that season.
