THE JUNE 7 ELECTIONS : Victories Expected for 4 Members of Congress

Three members of the Westside congressional delegation face what appears to be token opposition and a fourth is unopposed as the June 7 primary election approaches.

“It shouldn’t be a difficult time for any” of the three, said Republican political consultant Allan Hoffenblum, referring to the Democratic incumbents with primary opponents.

Some of the challengers acknowledge as much.

“Have you ever wondered what it feels like to be a salmon swimming upstream?” begins a press release from Jon Rappoport, the lone opponent to powerful Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Los Angeles) in the 29th Congressional District, which covers much of the Westside.

Waxman, a champion of health reform who has taken on the tobacco companies, is widely considered to be a shoe-in to win an 11th term in November in the solidly Democratic district.

Incumbent Anthony Beilenson (D-Woodland Hills) is similarly a heavy favorite against his primary opponent in the sprawling 24th district, which stretches from Malibu to Sherman Oaks and across parts of the San Fernando Valley to Thousand Oaks.

In the 32nd District, veteran Congressman Julian C. Dixon (D-Los Angeles) is heavily favored to defeat two challengers in the district that stretches from Baldwin Hills and Culver City to near Los Angeles International Airport.

First-term Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-Los Angeles), who represents the coastal 36th district that runs from Venice to the South Bay, has no primary opponent. She is expected to be the target of a lively Republican challenge in November, however.
