“Phantom of the Opera” comes to Santa Catalina Island on Saturday.

The 1925 silent film will be shown during the island’s annual Silent Film Benefit in the newly renovated Art Deco Avalon Theater. Located on the first floor of the island’s Casino Building, the 1,184-seat theater was built in 1929.

All proceeds benefit the Catalina Island Museum Society.

“There is a lot of audience participation in watching a silent film,” said Patricia Moore, director of the Catalina Museum. “It’s fun for viewers of all ages, and people are always amazed at the sophistication of the art of silent film.”

The film, which stars Lon Chaney, will be accompanied by Gaylord Carter on the theater’s original 1929 Page organ.
