It would be the biggest thrill of his baseball career, an accomplishment that many major league players dream about but never realize.

Yet, when asked about his hopes of representing the Angels at the All-Star game, right fielder Tim Salmon says that as great an honor as it would be, he simply doesn’t deserve it.

Not this year.

This year, he says, teammate Chili Davis should be going.

“I don’t feel I’m deserving,” Salmon said, despite batting .282 with 15 homers and 53 runs batted in before Wednesday’s game against the Seattle Mariners. “If you asked me who would get my vote, it would be Chili.”

Davis, a designated hitter, was batting .336 with 13 homers and 52 RBIs before Wednesday.

Although third baseman Eduardo Perez says that he’s ready to return to the Angels, batting .340 with 11 RBIs in 14 games at triple-A Vancouver, Manager Marcel Lachemann said that Perez probably will not be called up until after the All-Star break. . . . The Angels moved Mark Langston’s scheduled start Friday back two days to Sunday, Lachemann said, simply to give him extra rest. Langston has not pitched past the seventh inning since opening day.
