Hart Denies Reports of Boldvich’s Transfer

Contrary to published reports, quarterback Scott Boldvich of Burroughs High has not transferred to Foothill League rival Hart, according to Hart assistant Dean Herrington.

“There were various rumors, but they’re not true,” Herrington said. “We just want to set the record straight.”

Steve McKeon, a junior this fall, will be Hart’s starting quarterback, according to Herrington, Hart’s offensive coordinator.

Baseball

Ryan Hankins of Simi Valley was four for six with four runs batted in Friday as California advanced to the championship game of the Sunbelt Baseball Classic in Edmond, Okla. California lost to Ohio, 8-5, then defeated Florida, 7-3, to advance to the final. California will play Florida for the championship today at 4 p.m. PDT.

Hankins is batting .613 in six tournament games.

On Thursday, Hankins was two for six and scored a run in victories over Georgia (11-4) and Texas (4-3).

Valley College assistant Dave Buchanan has scheduled a series of baserunning clinics this summer for players Little League age and older.

Track and Field

Beth Burton of Cal State Northridge finished fifth in the women’s shotput in the USA Track & Field junior championships at Florida State on Friday.

Burton put the shot 46 feet 3 1/4 inches.

Brigham Young freshman Amy Christiansen was first with a mark of 51-3.

Auto Racing

Vintage motorcycles will claim the spotlight this weekend at Ventura Raceway. The quarter-mile clay oval is the site of the third annual Ventura Vintage Short Track Races and the Ventura Antique Classic Motorcycle Show and Exchange.

Today’s short track racing will include Harley-Davidsons, Triumphs, Excelsiors, Flying Merkels and other bikes at least 20 years old.

The biggest race of the evening is an event for Harley-Davidson 883s with a $1,000 purse. Racing begins at 7 p.m. Admission is $10, free for ages 12 and under.

On Sunday, classic bikes will be on display from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Admission is $5, free for 12 and under.

Miscellany

Driver Paul Grosso, 67, of Van Nuys, who was fatally injured during a midget-car exhibition last Saturday night at Saugus Speedway, died of “multiple traumatic injuries,” according to a spokesman with the L.A. County Coroner’s office. An examination was conducted this week.

Grosso, whose vintage car flipped during an eight-lap race during intermission, was airlifted to UCLA Medical Center, where he died early Sunday.

Retiring Los Angeles Kings star Dave Taylor has scheduled a celebrity charity golf tournament Monday at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village. Proceeds will will go toward the battle against cystic fibrosis. Several King players are expected to play.

The Amateur Athletic Foundation is offering free swimming instruction through August to youngsters between the ages of 7 and 17 from the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys.

Instruction will take place at pools in Granada Hills, Pacoima, Canoga Park, North Hollywood, Reseda, Panorama City, Van Nuys, Tujunga, Woodland Hills, Sylmar, Sun Valley, Canyon Country, Saugus and Valencia.

Cal State Northridge has hired Brian Swanson, a 1988 graduate of Northeast Missouri State, as assistant athletic director for external affairs.

Swanson, 28, who has served as the program’s director of camps and special programs, will be responsible for marketing and promotions of Matador athletics.

The North Valley Family YMCA is accepting sign-ups for a youth basketball league to begin July 30. Leagues are open to boys and girls ages 5 to 18.
