(St. Martin’s: $40; 420 pp.) Here is a history of the modern gay and lesbian movement, with essays, photographs, cartoons and interviews from the Advocate, that siren of gay life since 1967. There’s a lot of humor and a lot of chagrin, but best of all, it feels like a family photo album.
