FOUNTAIN VALLEY : Council OKs Repair for Park Ball Courts
Tennis, handball and basketball courts at three neighborhood parks and at the Fountain Valley Recreation and Cultural Center will be resurfaced to make them safer to play on.
Repairs will be made to 13 tennis and three handball courts at the Recreation Center, two tennis and one basketball court at Ellis Park and a basketball court at LaCapillia Park and Stonecress Park.
The City Council last week approved spending $55,000 for the repairs.
Wayne S. Osborne, public works director, said that the surfaces of the playing courts have become slick.
“The main purpose (for the repairs) is for safety reasons,” Osborne said, adding that a new coating provides more traction.
Osborne said the repair costs are $20,000 higher than normal because the existing coatings on two of the tennis courts must be removed before a new surface is applied.
The council is expected to award a bid to a contractor in September, with repair work to start in October.
Osborne said the tennis courts will be closed for about a week and the basketball courts shut down for 48 hours while repairs are being made.
