Villa Park’s DeVera Advances to Second Round in Tennis
Faye DeVera of Villa Park won her first-round match at the U.S. Tennis Assn. Girls’ 16 national championships Sunday in San Diego.
DeVera defeated Judy Wang of Eagan, Minn., 6-1, 6-4, and will play Michelle Degan today in the second round. Michelle Bray of Laguna Beach lost to fourth-seeded Holly Parkinson of Cherry Hills, N.J., 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.

The Corona del Mar 13-and-under water polo team won and tied a game in the U.S. Water Polo National Junior Olympic tournament.
Corona del Mar beat Los Alamitos, 12-4, and tied Octopus, a Palo Alto club team, 3-3, despite playing most of the second quarter and all of the second half a man down because of a ejection for brutality.
