SAUGUS SPEEDWAY : Cromsigt Wins Crash-Marred Main
SAUGUS — Pine Mountain’s Gerrit Cromsigt came from 22nd place to win his seventh 25-lap Pro Stock main event Saturday night before 3,380 at Saugus Speedway.
The race, which featured an inverted start with the fastest cars in the back of the pack, was marred by three crashes in the final four laps, with the checkered flag being waved while the race was stopped after Playa del Rey’s Mike Gatto flew into the wall on the final lap.
Gatto was apparently unhurt in the crash.
Reseda’s Richard Smith, who is third in the points standings, was running second when the race was stopped, and another Reseda resident, Richard Karvasek, was third.
In the 25-lap Street Stock feature, points leader John Schultz of Valencia added to his lead over Alta Loma’s Kirk Miller with a four-length victory.
Schultz also finished third in the four-lap trophy dash, behind Jeff Drummen of Northridge and Dean Grizzaffi of Granada Hills.
Drummen was third in the feature, just ahead of Whittier’s Greg Benner and San Pedro’s Mike Price.
Schultz started the main event from the second position and immediately grabbed the lead, only to be passed on the second lap by Grizzaffi, Drummen and Miller.
Robert Hynes of West Hills picked up his first feature victory in the 20-lap Mini Stock main event.
