Nudism: Potential Closure of Sacred Beach

The article “Nude Beach Unveils Political Dispute” (July 14) is a bit too reminiscent of the old story about the woman who calls the police to report a naked man in the house across the street. When they arrive, they can see nothing; she leads them upstairs to her bedroom and insists they look out the window. They point out that even from this vantage point, the man can only be seen from the waist up. “Stand on the bed! Stand on the bed!” she cries.

As one who has enjoyed the tranquil beauty of Sacred Beach for many years, I can honestly say that I have never personally witnessed any offensive behavior there, unless you count the occasional (clothed) fisherman littering the point with fast-food containers, which are usually picked up later by the beach-goers. It is possible, however, that my vision is not so keen as that of the complainant, who seems to be willing to walk a mile from the nearest parking, and then climb down a steep and treacherous cliff, expressly for the purpose of being offended.

I believe the key to this whole non-issue lies in the line “the council has the political will to close the beach since conservatives Marilyn Lyon and Lee Byrd were elected in November.” It is so sad to think of this quiet, beautiful spot being taken away from everyone, just to further the joyless agenda of a few who don’t even use the beach, but cannot bear to live with the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, is happy.
