Australian Food Firm to Buy U.S. Spice Maker: Tone Bros. Inc., a spice business in Iowa since 1873, is being sold to Burns Philp & Co. Burns Philp said it signed a letter of intent to purchase Tone Bros. from Rykoff-Sexton Inc., the Los Angeles-based food and food service business that has owned Tone since 1989. Terms were not disclosed. Tone had more than $90 million in sales last year. Burns Philp, an international food business based in Sydney, earned $80 million last year on $1.96 billion in sales. The maker of the French’s and Durkee brands said it intends to keep the Tone’s brand name.
