VENTURA : Hazardous Material Scare Closes Off Site
Ventura fire officials Wednesday briefly barricaded off an area north of Buenaventura Golf Course after a sanitation worker discovered an abandoned barrel of what was feared to be hazardous material.
Authorities later determined that the 55-gallon drum at 5700 Olivas Park Drive contained little more than oil, solvents and other similar materials.
Still, they closed a portion of Olivas Park Drive and Seaborg Avenue from 7:35 a.m. to about 10 a.m., Battalion Chief Roger Morgenthaler of the Ventura Fire Department said.
No evacuations were necessary, although traffic to the adjacent light industrial area--as well as contestants in a Wednesday golf tournament--had to be rerouted, Morgenthaler said.
Steve Rust, an assistant pro at the city-owned golf course, said the 127 golfers in the tournament experienced only minor inconvenience.
