BREA : City’s Plunge to Stay Open Through Oct. 2

Extra relief from the heat is being provided at the Brea Plunge, which will remain open into the early fall for the second consecutive year.

The city-owned outdoor pool traditionally closed after Labor Day, but in 1993 the schedule was extended as an experiment. This year, the Plunge will be be open for recreational swimming on weekends through Oct. 2.

“When people see how hot it is, they know kids want to be in the water,” said recreation supervisor Connie Oyler of the community services department. The expanded schedule for recreational swimming will begin Sept. 10, with sessions held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and 2:45 to 4:15 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Admission will be 50 cents for children and $1 for adults.

Swimming lessons have also been extended this year. Half-hour classes for all ages and skill levels are being taught from 3:30 to 7 p.m. weekdays through Sept. 9. The cost for two weeks of lessons is $27 for Brea residents and $32 for non-residents.

The plunge, which has been designated as a historic structure, originally opened in 1929 and was renovated in the 1970s and 1980s, Oyler said. The pool is in City Hall Park at 440 S. Walnut Ave.
