United Names Marketing Guru to Head Shuttle Service: The executive will lead the carrier’s short-haul shuttle into the battle with Southwest Airlines for West Coast passengers. Alan B. (Sky) Magary, Shuttle by United’s new president, had more than 20 years’ experience as a marketing executive with Pan Am, Republic Airlines and Northwest Airlines. United launches its short-haul budget-fare carrier on Oct. 1 with an initial schedule of 184 daily flights in eight West Coast markets. The shuttle is a product of the new employee-owned UAL Corp., in which the workers surrendered billions of dollars’ worth of wages and benefits in the hope of making the company more competitive.
