CAMARILLO : World War II Planes to Be Displayed

More than two dozen fully restored World War II aircraft will be on display over the Labor Day weekend when the Southern California Wing of the Confederate Air Force holds an open house at Camarillo Airport.

The display will feature a variety of aircraft used during the war, including C-46 transport planes, Bearcat fighters and a Mitchell bomber.

There will also be a series of flying demonstrations Saturday, Sunday and Monday, with weather dictating the times and schedules, Confederate Air Force Col. Pat Brown said.

“We’ll show you what the cockpit looks like and you can see the way the troops were carried and where the wounded were cared for,” Brown said. “We have several aircraft that will be set up with ladders across the wings, so people can go across and see what it looks like from the wings.”

Music from the 1940s will be played to help set the mood, Brown said.

The open house, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, is free to the public and there is no charge for parking. It is situated at the Camarillo Airport just off the Ventura Freeway.

A barbecue dinner is scheduled for Saturday after the open house. For $15, the public is invited to dine with the pilots and ask questions about the vintage planes.
