The bodies of two elderly people who may have been dead for up to 10 days were found Thursday by police who had been asked to check their home.

Officers were held at bay by a barking dog for several hours before they could enter the house in the 200 block of East Wilson Street, according to Sgt. Matt Collett.

Police would not release the names of the residents or the cause of death. After discovering the bodies about 9:30 a.m., officers sealed the house until investigators could obtain a search warrant, Collett said.

Neighbors identified the residents as an elderly husband and wife who had lived in the middle-class area of single-family homes for 25 years. The husband, they said, was a retired Marine Corps pilot, and the couple had met and married in Japan.

The man had recently suffered a stroke and was depressed, neighbors said, and was scheduled to visit a medical clinic for tests on Thursday.

Neighbors had called police and asked them to check on the couple.
