Weibring Takes Two-Shot Lead

D.A. Weibring opened a two-shot lead Friday in the Greater Milwaukee Open, shooting a five-under 66 on the Brown Deer Park Golf Course.

Weibring led with a two-day total of 11-under 131, two better than Loren Roberts, whose 63 Friday was one shot better than the course record by held by tournament executive director Tom Strong. Jay Haas, Bob Estes and Dave Barr also were at 133.

Jim Albus made a 12-foot eagle putt on the final hole for a six-under 66 and a one-stroke lead over England’s Tony Jacklin in the GTE Northwest Classic at Kenmore, Wash.

Hockey

The Mighty Ducks acquired the rights to minor league defenseman Darren Van Impe from the New York Islanders, giving up a conditional 1995 draft pick.

The 21-year-old Van Impe, who signed a multiyear contract, had 43 goals and 111 assists in 112 games in two seasons with Red Deer of the Western Hockey League. He was selected 170th overall by the Islanders in the 1993 draft.

The Ducks also signed Jeremy Stevenson and Brian Sullivan.

Right wing Bob Probert of the Chicago Blackhawks was placed on indefinite inactive status by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman for league-supervised treatment for substance abuse.

New York Islander right wing David Volek, who scored the winning goal in overtime of Game 7 of the 1993 Patrick Division final against the Pittsburgh Penguins, announced his retirement. Volek, 28, sat out most of last season because of a herniated disk in his lower back.

The Hartford Whalers signed veteran goaltender Sean Burke to a four-year contract. Burke is entering his seventh NHL season.

Miscellany

Barry Bonds will ask that his monthly family-support payments be restored to the level that a judge determined last month, said his attorney, Robert Nachshin.

San Mateo County Commissioner George Taylor withdrew as a judge in the case Thursday, and reversed an earlier decision that halved Bonds’ family support payments from $15,000 to $7,500 per month. After cutting the payments, Taylor had asked the baseball star for his autograph.

Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona said he probably will never play again and blamed FIFA for making his life miserable. “My career has passed,” he said.

“They killed me,” he said of FIFA, which last month suspended Maradona for 15 months for testing positive for the stimulant ephedrine during the World Cup. The suspension ends on Sept. 29, 1995.

Former UCLA basketball coach Walt Hazzard will be named a special administrative assistant and scout with the Lakers next week, a job that will include community service work and projects with Coach Del Harris.

Former Kansas City Chief running back John Stephens was being sought in the Miami area after being charged with raping a woman at a Kansas City hotel last month. Earlier this week, he was arrested in Miami for allegedly carrying a concealed weapon and later released, police said.

The Kingdome will be reopened Nov. 1 at a cost of $32.5 million, said Dick Sandaas, the stadium’s interim director. The stadium, closed since mid-July, should reopen in time for the Seattle Seahawks’ Nov. 6 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, he said.

Bob Knight, Indiana’s basketball coach, will not face state charges for hunting geese without his license, Sullivan County Prosecutor John S. Elmore said. Elmore said Knight, who had been cited early Thursday, had provided proof that he had the proper permits.

John Hendry’s goal with 1:27 left gave Buffalo an 8-7 victory over Portland to complete a two-game sweep in the finals of the Roller Hockey International playoffs at Buffalo.

Robby Gordon won the provisional pole for Sunday’s Vancouver Molson-Indy with a fast lap of 109.043 m.p.h.

Geoff Bodine broke the Darlington Raceway qualifying record to win the Southern 500 pole. Bodine averaged 166.998 m.p.h.

Swimming

Zimbabwe diver Evan Stewart, who attends the University of Tennessee, upset favored Lan Wei of China at the World Swimming Championship in Rome. It was Zimbabwe’s first ever gold medal. American Brian Earley won the bronze.

Cycling

Miguel Indurain, four-time Tour de France champion, set a distance record by covering 32.96 miles in one hour, going from Spain to Bordeaux, France. The old mark of 32.76 miles was set in April by Scotland’s Graham Obree.
