COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Women Open Volleyball Season With Victory

Denise Dumble set a UC Irvine match record with seven aces as the Anteaters beat Southwest Missouri State in three games in the opening round of the Anteater women’s volleyball tournament Friday at Crawford Hall.

Popi Edwards and Stacy Mitchell each had 11 kills as UC Irvine won, 15-4, 15-8, 16-14, in the season-opener for both teams.

Dumble, a transfer from Bakersfield College, passed the mark of six aces set in 1988 by Kim Collins against Northern Illinois.

Missy Clements, a former standout at La Habra High, had 21 kills as Cal State Northridge rallied to beat Fresno State, 13-15, 8-15, 15-3, 15-6, 15-13, in the other match.

UC Irvine plays Cal State Northridge at noon and Fresno State at 7 p.m. today.

In the Concordia Labor Day Volleyball Festival:

Concordia and Southern California College advance--The Eagles and Vanguards each won twice in pool play to advance to the championship bracket. Concordia beat Cal State Hayward, 8-15, 15-8, 9-15, 15-12, 15-13, and Cal State Dominguez Hills, 15-8, 15-17, 15-10, 15-2. Southern California College beat Christian Heritage, 15-6, 15-2, 15-3, then swept Whitworth, 15-7, 16-14, 15-13.

In the San Diego Tournament:

Central Florida 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Lisa Fa’agata had nine kills but Cal State Fullerton lost, 15-13, 15-9, 15-5, in its season opener. Michelle Cutright had nine kills for Central Florida (1-1).
