‘Used People’
Floating on a sweet cloud of nostalgia and wish-fulfillment, director Beeban Kidron and writer Todd Graf spin a romantic 1992 comedy-drama. Set in 1969 Queens, N.Y., the film is about a Jewish widow (Shirley MacLaine, pictured) who suddenly finds herself pursued by an impassioned Italian neighbor (Marcello Mastroianni, pictured) who has worshiped her from afar for decades. Mastroianni, however, not only has to win over MacLaine but also her family: her frustrated daughter (Kathy Bates), her skeptical mother (Jessica Tandy), her schizophrenic glamorous other daughter (Marcia Gay Harden) and her even more disturbed 12-year-old grandson (Matthew Branton) (HBO Sunday at 6 p.., Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.).
