Florida won its opener by 49 points but it wasn’t enough to keep the Gators on top of the Associated Press college football poll Sunday.

Nebraska, which had the weekend off after beating West Virginia, 31-0, in the Kickoff Classic on Aug. 28, replaced Florida as the No. 1 team despite the Gators’ 70-21 rout of New Mexico State Saturday.

The Cornhuskers, who were No. 4 in the preseason poll before moving up to No. 2 last week, edged the Gators by three points in the nationwide media poll. They received 23 first-place votes and 1,465 points to 15 first-place votes and 1,462 points for Florida.

It is the first No. 1 AP ranking for Nebraska since late 1987, when it was on top for one week.

The Cornhuskers also replaced the Gators as No. 1 in the USA Today-CNN coaches’ poll. Florida was second, Florida State third.

The change didn’t seem to bother Gator Coach Steve Spurrier.

“Nebraska was very impressive in their victory,” Spurrier said. “I think all the coaches saw that game last Sunday, and no one saw us play. Probably the feeling around the country is that the Gators ran it up on New Mexico State instead of getting all our points in the first half.”

Notre Dame was third in the AP poll, followed in the top 10 by Florida State, Miami, Michigan, Colorado, Penn State, Arizona and Wisconsin. Alabama was 11th and Auburn 12th, followed by UCLA and USC in 13th and 14th.

SATURDAY’S LATE GAME

Brigham Young 13, Hawaii 12--Running back Jamaal Willis completed an 18-yard pass to Mike Johnston, setting up his one-yard scoring dive in the fourth quarter Saturday night that gave the Cougars a 13-12 Western Athletic Conference victory in Honolulu.

Willis was the game’s leading rusher with 71 yards in 14 carries.
