FULLERTON : Resident Gets OK to Split Land Into 6 Lots
City Council members this week gave a resident permission to split a 5.6-acre parcel of land into six lots for single-family homes.
The move, passed on a 4-1 vote, was denied in July by the Planning Commission after the landowner’s neighbors asked the city to allow the land to be split into no more than five lots.
The land fronts Vista Lomitas Drive and Lindendale Avenue. Neighbors said they were concerned about grading problems that may arise when the landowner, Roger Stull, begins building homes on the steep lots.
But city officials said those concerns would be addressed later when Stull submits grading plans.
“All we’re doing now is drawing the lines,” said Tom King, Stull’s engineer.
Councilwoman Julie Sa said she feels “strongly that the resident should have the right to do with their property whatever they want.”
Councilman Chris Norby said Stull “still has to go through a lot of hoops, some of them flaming.”
Still, residents said six lots, which range in size from 23,600 to 71,550 square feet, would be smaller than surrounding properties and be “inconsistent” with the character of the area.
Councilwoman Molly McClanahan agreed and cast the lone dissenting vote.
Mayor A.B. (Buck) Catlin said many area homes, built over the past 30 years are “vastly different in character, so I don’t really think that that’s a problem.”
