U.N. Official’s Daughter Shot in Cambodia
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — The 5-year-old daughter of a U.N. human rights official in Cambodia was shot and left outside a hospital in Phnom Penh, a U.N. official said today.
“They (unidentified gunmen) shot her in the leg and dumped her in the street,” the official, Benny Widyono, said. “The poor girl is only 5 years old--she’s in trauma.”
He said she will be evacuated to Bangkok, Thailand.
Monica Oliveiros was shot after gunmen stole the U.N. vehicle in which she was sitting shortly before midnight Thursday, he said.
Her parents, Louis and Maria Lu, had returned from a party and had just stepped out of the car when the men struck, taking the vehicle and the girl with it.
Louis Oliveiros, from Spain, is a U.N. human rights official here.
Some observers in Phnom Penh believe the attack was in retaliation for a recent U.N. report that said powerful military officers were running a secret jail and torture center.
