COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Nebraska Runs for 524 Yards in Overwhelming Texas Tech
LUBBOCK, Tex. — Tommie Frazier ran for two touchdowns and threw for one as No. 1 Nebraska broke open a close game in the second half and beat Texas Tech, 42-16, Thursday night.
Lawrence Phillips helped Nebraska (2-0) pull away, running for two touchdowns and most of his 175 yards in the third quarter.
The Cornhuskers ran for 524 yards, relying mostly on Phillips, Cory Schlesinger and Clinton Childs. Frazier rushed for 84 yards and threw for 88.
It was defense that kept Texas Tech (1-1) within reach until midway through the third quarter. The unit, led by linebacker Zach Thomas, sacked Frazier once and had four tackles for losses.
Frazier gave Nebraska a 7-0 lead 2:01 into the game when he sprinted 58 yards down the right sideline, then made it 14-0 by going the last three yards of a 98-yard drive in the second quarter.
The Red Raiders made it 14-9 early in the third quarter on Zebbie Lethridge’s six-yard pass to tight end Scott Aylor.
Then Phillips took over, vaulting two yards to make it 21-9, then sprinting 56 yards to give the Cornhuskers a safe 28-9 lead.
