After Losing Out on the Dollars, Tu Gains Quarters

Fourth-seeded Meilen Tu of Northridge was one of three Americans to advance to today’s quarterfinal round of the Junior U.S. Open--an international tournament in Flushing Meadow, N.Y.

Tu, 16, a first-round loser last week in the professional U.S. Open, defeated 16th-seeded Nannie de Villiers of South Africa, 6-1, 7-5.

Nancy Garrison has been named women’s tennis coach at Cal Lutheran. Garrison takes over a team that finished 1-6 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 3-16 overall last season.

Garrison, 45, has been nationally ranked by the U.S. Tennis Assn. In 1989 she was ranked No. 6 in USTA Women’s 40-and-over doubles. She replaces outgoing coach Dr. Carla DuPuis.

Football

Starting with tomorrow’s 6:05 p.m. game against Boise State, Cal State Northridge football games will be broadcast on KCSN-FM 88.5.

Northridge games were previously aired on KMGX-FM 94.3, but a change in ownership forced the Matadors to find a new station.

Joe Buttitta will call the play-by-play, with former Northridge quarterback Dana Potter providing analysis.

Volleyball

Beach Court will be holding its second annual volleyball clinic at Pierce College tomorrow.

The clinic is free and is open to anyone 10 years and older.

Water Polo

Eight teams will compete in the Ventura College Invitational today and Saturday at the school’s pool.

The tournament favorite is Golden West College, five-time defending state champion and once again the top-ranked team in California.

Also playing are defending champion Ventura, ranked No. 8 in the state, and Valley.

Baseball

Senior third baseman Brett Niles has transferred from Crespi High to Calabasas for financial reasons, he said Thursday.

Niles, who was used sparingly at Crespi last spring, batted .362 for the Encino American Legion team during the summer.
