JEWISH CEMETERIES: Memorial services for families to pay tribute to deceased relatives will be held Sunday at Jewish cemeteries, a tradition associated with the High Holy Days that end Thursday with Yom Kippur.
Those planning to attend the 40th Kever Avot services at 10 a.m. at Mount Sinai Memorial Park have been invited to bring packages of non-perishable food. The food gifts will be given to five agencies, Jewish and non-Jewish, that serve the hungry and the homeless. The cemetery is at 5950 Forest Lawn Drive.
At the noontime Kever Avot service at Sholom Memorial Park in Sylmar, Rabbi Joshua Berkowitz of Beth Jacob Congregation in Beverly Hills will deliver the address. The service will be in the Chapel of Eternal Light at the cemetery, which is located at 13017 N. Lopez Canyon Road.
CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP: The announcement from United Methodist Church of Tujunga introducing a new “contemporary worship service” at 9 a.m. Sunday promises that it will last no more than 45 minutes, that guitars, keyboards and drums will replace the organ and choir, that skits and videos will replace the sermon and the dress code is “come as you are.”
As if that weren’t enough, a pamphlet also advises that you can call the church ((818) 352-1481) or Pastor Glen Haworth any time, and “his name is Glen, not Reverend, Father or Pastor--just Glen.”
But for those who are uncomfortable with all that informality, the church at 9901 Tujunga Canyon Boulevard still holds a traditional worship service at 10:30 a.m.
CATHOLIC SPEAKER: Brother Peter Donohue, director of detention ministries for the Los Angeles Roman Catholic Archdiocese, will speak at 10 a.m. Monday in Montrose at a meeting of the East San Fernando Valley District of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women.
Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. by Father John K. Foley, pastor of the host church, Holy Redeemer Church, 2411 Montrose Ave. For reservations at the event and a luncheon, call Jo Ann Olivier at (818) 790-7392.
