PREP FOOTBALL / Saturday Pullout : Late Scores Lift Loyola Past Barons
HUNTINGTON BEACH — Los Angeles Loyola rallied for three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to beat Fountain Valley, 21-7, in a nonleague football game Friday at Huntington Beach High.
The Cubs (1-0), ranked ninth in The Times’ preseason poll, scored three touchdowns in 5 minutes 17 midway in the final quarter.
Fountain Valley’s only touchdown came when Joey Rozek caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chris Ponchak with 6:20 left in the third quarter. Ponchak was 12 for 25 for 136 yards and two interceptions.
Loyola took a 14-7 lead when quarterback Kyle Spielbuhler narrowly avoided a sack and completed a 52-yard touchdown pass to Dan Farmer with 8:30 left in the game.
Spielbuhler was eight for 16 for 120 yards and an interception.
Fountain Valley (0-1) fumbled on its next possession. Ponchak was hit while scrambling and Loyola’s Bryan Dunn recovered the ball at the Barons’ 20.
Four plays later, Mike Vanis scored on a one-yard run off tackle to put the Cubs ahead, 21-7.
Loyola had tied it, 7-7, on its first possession of the fourth quarter. Mike Ellison broke a 41-yard run down the left sideline with 11:16 left in the quarter.
