SOUTHERN SECTION FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : With Stifling Defense, Antelope Valley Posts 8-0 Victory
Jermaine Lewis scored on a 16-yard run in the first quarter and Antelope Valley High made it hold up for an 8-0 victory over Hesperia on Friday night in a Southern Section nonleague opener.
The game was the first played at Jay Reed Field at Sultana High in Hesperia.
Justin Reinier scored on a run off tackle for the two-point conversion after Lewis scored with 3:33 to play in the quarter.
Lewis, a 5-foot-7, 155-pound junior tailback, rushed 18 times for 130 yards.
Antelope Valley, which advanced to the Division I semifinals last season, played exceptional defense.
Linebacker Chad Murphy sacked Hesperia quarterback Matt Lewallen for an 11-yard loss on a critical third down on the Scorpions’ final possession.
The play took Hesperia from the Antelope Valley 22 to the 33 with 42 seconds left. On fourth down, Perry Highfill dropped a pass near the first-down marker and Antelope Valley took over on downs.
Antelope Valley quarterback Trymon Redick carried seven times for 46 yards, playing all but one drive in the second half with a dislocated middle finger on his throwing hand.
Redick threw only one pass, and it was incomplete.
Defensive lineman Anthony Borda recovered a fumble and had a sack for Antelope Valley and linebacker Luis Perez also recovered a fumble.
