COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Mears’ Goal Gives Fullerton a Soccer Victory

Kyle Mears scored with about 16 minutes left to give Fullerton a 1-0 victory over Moorpark in a nonconference men’s soccer game Friday at Fullerton.

Mears’ goal came on a header off a corner kick by Pedro Ortega in the 84th minute for the Hornets (1-0). Moorpark is 0-1.

In other men’s soccer games:

Rancho Santiago 5, Los Angeles Harbor 0--Francisco Islas had two goals, Henry Hernandez and Raul Montes each added one and Jose Meza recorded two saves to lead visiting Rancho Santiago.

Southwestern 3, Cypress 3--Southwestern’s Rob Monroe scored a goal with 15 seconds left to tie it, 3-3. Daniel Buda had two goals for Cypress (0-0-1). Giancarlo Cassanova scored Cypress’ other goal.

In the Las Positas women’s soccer tournament:

Cypress 4, Las Positas 0--Tracy Van Herk, Carlye Wind, Mandy Wheeler and Christine Tyler had goals for Cypress (1-0).

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Irvine Valley 6, Oxnard 1--Shannon Cunningham had three goals to lead Irvine Valley (1-0) in its season opener. Jen Kopsstein had two goals and two saves.

In nonconference water polo:

Cypress 30, Mt. San Antonio 6--Freshman David Johnson scored seven goals for Cypress (1-0). Matt Johnson and Mustafa Hassan each added five goals for the Chargers.

At the San Diego Mesa women’s cross-country meet:

Orange Coast women second--Orange Coast’s Erin Remy finished the 5,000 meter race in 21 minutes 16 seconds to take second at Balboa Park. The Orange Coast women’s team finished second overall with 73 points, eight points behind San Diego Mesa.
