COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UCI Is Seventh in Water Polo Event

UC Irvine earned a seventh-place finish with a 7-5 victory over Santa Barbara at the Newport SeaFest Southern California water polo tournament Sunday at Corona del Mar High.

Stanford, the top-ranked team in the nation, won the tournament Sunday with a 15-11 victory over USC.

California beat UCLA, 9-6, for third place and Pacific beat Pepperdine, 9-3, in the fifth-place contest.

In the game with Santa Barbara, UC Irvine trailed, 5-3, entering the fourth quarter. Ofer Horn tied it with a two-point shot and the Anteaters took the lead, 6-5, on a goal from Ryan Bailey with 5 minutes 37 seconds left.

Peter Muller scored the final goal for Irvine (2-3), which had lost to Pacific, 8-4, earlier Sunday.

In men’s soccer:

UC Irvine 2, Cal State San Bernardino 1--Michael Succi scored off an assist from Jon Szczuka in the second half to break a 1-1 tie for host Irvine in the UCI/Nike Classic.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

UC Irvine 1, Pacific 0 (OT)--Tracie Manz scored in overtime for visiting UC Irvine (2-1).
