THOUSAND OAKS : Adult School Seeks Literacy Volunteers
The Conejo Valley Adult School Literacy Program is seeking volunteers to tutor adults in basic literacy skills.
Tutors--who do not need a background in teaching--will be expected to work with adult students for a minimum of two hours a week, during weekdays or evenings, at the adult school’s literacy center.
“We have a program well-established that has up to 90 tutors during the school year,” said Literacy Coordinator Marge Ceran. “(But) during the fall classes we try to get about 25 new tutors.”
Tutors work one-on-one with students, teaching reading, writing, spelling and speaking skills, Ceran said. During the past two years, the literacy program has served about 105 students annually.
A free workshop for interested volunteers will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at the adult school’s learning center, 1025 Old Farm Road in Thousand Oaks.
