Mother of 2 Hit in Gang Cross-Fire Dies; No Arrests Made
SANTA ANA — A 25-year-old woman who was shot in a gang cross-fire last weekend died of her wounds Monday without regaining consciousness, police said.
Mary Corona of Westminster had been in critical condition since the shooting in the 1300 block of West Pine Street. She was sitting in a parked vehicle when occupants drove by and began firing at another car, according to Sgt. Dennis Rios. The shooting was gang-related, Rios said.
The occupant of one of the cars, Gabriel Chairez, 23, is still hospitalized with bullet wounds, police said, and a second occupant, Charles Camacho, 18, was released after being treated for minor wounds.
Corona, the mother of two small children, had just left a Mexican restaurant when the shooting occurred. She held two jobs to support the children.
Corona’s family could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
No arrests have been made in the case, Rios said, and the investigation is continuing.
The shootings took place near where police staged one of the city’s largest gang crackdowns last week. In that sweep, more than 100 people were indicted on drug and other charges.
