Arroyo’s John Hake, the defending Mission Valley League cross-country champion, won the Division I race at the Bronco Invitational at Cal Poly Pomona and led the Knights to a third-place finish.

Hake won Saturday’s race in 15 minutes, 56.1 seconds, the fourth-fastest time in the meet’s six-year history. Arroyo, which had 194 points, finished behind Alta Loma (139) and Nogales (189).

Rowland’s water polo team began its season on a championship note by winning the Bell Gardens tournament.

Rowland defeated Bell Gardens, 12-11, for the title. Tony Grosso scored four goals for the Knights in the championship match. Kenny Clements and Michael Mineo each scored two goals.

The Arcadia girls’ volleyball team entered the week riding a wave of confidence after sweeping Royal, 15-9, 15-7, 15-9, in a matchup between two traditionally strong Southern Section programs.

Nicole Becker led Arcadia with 11 kills.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Pasadena City College football team, which defeated Orange Coast, 27-25, in its opener last week, will play Golden West Saturday at Orange Coast College.

Christian Emerson kicked a 27-yard field goal with two seconds left to lift Pasadena to its victory. It was the first field goal ever for Emerson, who played soccer at Temple City High.

Freshman tailback Saladin McCullough rushed for 143 yards in 27 carries and caught six passes for 68 yards. He scored two touchdowns for the Lancers, who led, 24-0, at halftime.

Treyvonne Towns had 10 tackles for Pasadena.

Mt. San Antonio College is coming off a 39-39 tie against Fullerton. The Mounties appeared to be on the verge of a come-from-behind victory, but their celebration after a 23-yard touchdown pass play from Cody Lee Smith to Tony Campbell with no time left resulted in a 15-yard penalty.

Rodrigo Vera missed the extra-point attempt and the game ended in a tie.

Alex Brown gained 121 yards in 13 carries and scored two touchdowns for Mt. SAC. He also caught six passes for 64 yards. The Mounties are idle this week.

First-year Citrus Coach Dean Karnoski will be looking for his first victory Saturday when the Owls travel to L.A. Southwest.

Citrus lost its opener against Glendale, 28-26. Gabe Agredano completed 16 of 26 passes for 316 yards and three touchdowns for the Owls, but a two-point conversion pass to Cesar Barroso with 2:38 left was batted away.

COLLEGES

La Verne will attempt to improve its record to 2-0 Saturday when the Leopards travel to Azusa Pacific for a nonconference game.

La Verne rallied to beat Menlo, 42-38, last week on a three-yard run by quarterback Ryan Campuzano with 4:29 left. La Verne once led, 35-19.

Campuzano completed 16 of 29 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 14 times for 64 yards.

Anthony Rice caught nine passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns. Bill Battin had six catches for 124 yards. He also threw a 62-yard touchdown pass.

Azusa Pacific is coming off a 31-14 season-opening loss to Redlands. Freshman quarterback Ben Focke completed nine of 18 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns for the Cougars.

Pomona-Pitzer travels to Colorado College after losing its opener last week against Macalester (Minn.), 42-12. Claremont begins its season Saturday when the Stags play host to Cal Lutheran.

Athan James Shaka, an NCAA Division III tennis champion who graduated from Harvey Mudd College in 1980, was a recipient of the inaugural Rolex Achievement Award last week in New York.

The award was established to pay tribute to college tennis players who have achieved excellence in post-graduate careers. Shaka, an associate professor of chemistry at UC Irvine, has won several awards for his research. He received a doctorate from Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s volleyball team, ranked 20th in Division II, will participate in the Cal State Dominguez Hills tournament starting Friday.

Pomona won two matches and lost two last weekend at the UC Davis tournament. The Broncos lost to Metro State, beat Chico State, beat UC Davis and lost to San Francisco State.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Daylon McCutcheon, Bishop Amat--McCutcheon, a senior who played wide receiver and defensive back the past two seasons, made his debut at tailback a memorable one.

He rushed for 253 yards in 17 carries and scored touchdowns on runs of 67, 18, five, four and 33 yards in Bishop Amat’s 34-7 victory over defending City Section champion Carson.

McCutcheon is the son of Ram scout and former running back Lawrence McCutcheon.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Anthony Rice, La Verne--Rice, a sophomore who graduated from Garey High, caught nine passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns in the Leopards’ 42-38 victory over Menlo.

Rice scored on pass plays of 65 and 79 yards.

MISCELLANY

The city of Azusa is sponsoring a men’s C/D slow-pitch softball tournament scheduled for Oct. 1-2.
